is that OO fell for the oldest trick in the book. Not a good selling point.

Just today, at lunch time, I overheard some blowhard laugh with his capitalist buddies, "Why don't you occupy a job"...hehehehe. Ugh. I hate that shit. I immediately wanted to run after the asshole and tell him about my job and why both me and my boss support Occupy, but I missed my chance.

I loathe the OPD. I think they are corrupt. I think the Mayor is corrupt (and really stupid too). Most of us in Oakland really really want to support OO. But, not when they do stupid childish crap like stage Fuck the Police rallies and try and break and enter into buildings or burn flags, or destroy kids art. That shit just doesn't fly with most of us over the age of 30.

So if this rally today was a Quan thing and just orientated at dividing the community, that is one thing, but if it really was another group who wants to protest, but not violently (yes, vandalism is violence), then that is a completely different thing that I think resonates with a large part of the community.

Obviously I cannot speak for all of Oakland, but I do live here and I do engage with lots of people everyday. I have worked at 14th and Broadway for 10 years. I talk to the shopkeepers daily. I am known by name at a multitude of establishments. This is my community too and I am telling you, while they support Occupy, they do not support the vandalism and violence.

This is what the local paper says: SFGate

I saw the rally from my office, but didn't know what it was for, and it looked really small, so I didn't check it out. I wish I had now.

If it was organized by Quan, that is pretty disgusting. But, the paper made it sound like a different approach to OO, which I would be interested in.

    •  The "destroy kids art" was a lie. (1+ / 0-)

"Breaking into" City Hall was a lie.

Burning a flag outside City Hall and vandalism inside City Hall were true, but no one knows who did it. If I accused the Chamber of Commerce of breaking local merchants' windows on November 2nd it would have equal validity as claiming Occupy Oakland perpetrated the vandalism in City Hall on January 28th, at least in a court of law.

If your compatriots don't support violence they should be equally (and, in fact more) appalled at the violence of the police. The fact that they are not speaks to the powerful tendency to defer to authority and the influence of the media. When all protesters must act as saints, while the police are allowed, in the eyes of the citizenry, to act as barbarians over and over, well, what can one say?

    •  I think a few folks did fall for it (3+ / 0-)

But this was really the actions of a very few people. Not the smartest thing for them to do.

There revolution will not be televised. But it will be blogged, a lot. Probably more so than is necessary.

OO refuses to state that it is nonviolent. That is my rub. I understand that we are not police and we cannot stop people from fucking shit up, but as a group that supposedly represents the 99%, we could at the minimum say we don't sanction violence against people or property.
