    There is a romance and a beauty about Detroit.

      it captures the imagination. And I used "romance" more in the sense of something that is larger than life, epic. (not romance like "detroit is for lovers," heh.) It's loss and revitalization and re-creation, all on different lots on the same block. There's a reason the media seems to be so intrigued by it - it's not just gawking at disaster, it's that it feels like there is real possibility. (for a certain kind of person. I'm not living there myself).

      I do think it's literally beautiful and haunting. Take a look at the photos on Sweet Juniper, or the photos of the abandoned train station - how about thePhoto essay in Time? One more - Forgotten Detroit photos of train station.
