When a tragedy that a family has to endure under any circumstances is compounded by what I'm sure felt like helplessness in the face of the daunting costs associated with treatment, we expose the ugliest side of ourselves as a nation.

I may be totally off base but perhaps your dad is feeling a bit of "no one helped us, why should anyone else get a free ride". To allow himself to feel sympathy for others in a similar situation would tear his wounded heart open again. Tragedy like that can harden a person. I do hope you all find some peace in knowing you did the best you could with the resources you had.

I also fervently hope we all live to see the day this country has true universal, single-payer health care.
