put on a faux "everyman" persona and downplay his wealthy pedigree.

      Romney, not so much.

This is my life. All the pain, all the joy it brings. All through the years, the blood, sweat, and tears, my hopes and my fears -- all that has led me to now. This is my life, and I wouldn't change a thing.

    •  Because Shrub worked very, very hard at presenting (12+ / 0-)

himself as a good ol' boy from Texas.

The best example? The Crawford "ranch."

(No horses, at least none that Shrub ever rode.Frankly, I think he's afraid of horses. I mean, if a president can actually sit a saddle, he's going to get some pictures taken of him doing it, right? Reagan certainly did. Ever seen a picture of Shrub on a horse?)

But a great place to shoot video of Shrub in a cowboy hat cutting mesquite with the boys. Shrub in a cowboy hat, cooking barbecue for the boys. Shrub having breakfast with ordinary folks at the local cafe. Yep, the kind of guy you could drink beer with.

And it worked. I used to see bumper stickers down here in Texas that said, "Thank God we have a Cowboy President!"

About a cowboy who, so far as I can tell, never rode a horse.

Freedom has two enemies: Those who want to control everyone around them...and those who feel no need to control themselves.
