  •  twigg, you are the kind of dad (6+ / 0-)

I aspire to be. I have two daughters, ages 4 and 23 mos., and we live in a blue neighborhood in a blue city (Columbus) in the purple state of Ohio. It would not be hard for us to encounter people who are a lot like your neighbors and your daughter's friends' families, who are conservative Christians who believe they are entitled to sit as judge and jury over the lives of other people. After all, this is the home of Rod Parsley. The only way to deal with them is to assert your individual right of conscience and make it clear that you don't agree. It makes no sense to try to dialog with such people.

You are right, hate is unnatural for young people. Once learned, it can be hard to give up, but, increasingly, it's hard for those who hate to get along in this society that is becoming more diverse, even in the so-called "red" enclaves. When hate is exposed to the hater as the way the elites are attempting to control the hater to serve the elite's ends, then hate of the "other" is put away and the hate is turned on the elite. Religious dogmatism focusing on the "other" as sinner is only one way this control over others is manifested.

You are doing the best thing for your daughter-- you are there for her, which is probably the most important thing for the parents of teenagers to do. Good luck.

      Ask the kiids :)

I yell, I lose my temper from time to time, and life is hectic.

But the kids never question that they are loved, so we get some stuff right, and make some mistakes.

It always amazes me that the smallest electronic item comes with a 200 page manual, yet all kids come with is a dirty diaper and a Birth Certificate

      We muddle through.

I hope that the quality of debate will improve,
but I fear we will remain Democrats.

I'd take that over "perfect" any day of the week.

As difficult as it was reading your diary, thank you for posting it.

My partner's dad lives outside of Billings, MT. We visit every couple of years. It truly is a different world (and Billings is not exactly "Bible Belt" at least relatively speaking). As lovely a place as Montana may be I'm always relieved to come home to the eclectic eccentric bubble that is San Francisco.
