And what is wrong with euthanasia, if a person is suffering so much that they want their life to end?

I guess in that case, people don't deserve having a choice and control over their own body. Nope, no inconsistency there.

the decision.  Like Nazis working toward the perfect race. Choosing to die when life no longer has quality, is a personal choice, and very different---in my mind.

    •  What does euthanasia have to do with it? (10+ / 0-)

As someone who works in advocacy for people with disabilities, I agree with you that the comment was over the top and I find it offensive, but I have to disagree that it has anything to do with people being denied choice about their own end-of-life decisions.

In terms of owning our own bodies and making our own medical decisions, I believe the right to die, in a way and time of one's own choosing, is fundamental.

I think when you use the term euthanasia, you are perhaps conflating the right to die with dignity, with the idea that people would choose to "put down" a person who acquires a disability, like so-called "animal shelters" perform "euthanasia" on adoptable animals because no one takes them home quick enough, or they are just the wrong breed. That's not euthanasia, it's just killing them. It's wrong, for animals and certainly for people too. But making the right to die a legal right for us all us something I feel strongly about. I fear getting sucked into the medical system and 'treated' for things against my will, past when it is time to go. I want to be allowed to say no to that, and if I'm suffering a slow and painful death I think I must have the right to decide when to say goodnight and leave the party.

Look, I understand your reaction to those comments ... I agree that to say no child with a disability should be allowed to be born, and call mothers who bear them 'selfish' is an awful thing to say. But you must be able to separate that from the right to a death with dignity for all people, and the right to make their own end of life choices including when it is time to go and we should be able to decide that as long as we are mentally competent to decide, or do so in advance in certain conditions.
