  •  I never had an abortion, but (20+ / 0-)

two young girls who were close to me did and it changed their lives. The first was only 13 when she became pregnant by a 23yr old married man. I know you are thinking "How, why no jail, child abuse!" and you would be right, but in 1974 there was no interest by the police in going after this guy.

The girl's parents did everything that they could think of to get this guy taken in or at least out of their daughter's life. She was rebellious and always found a way to see him and no policeman would touch him, in Utah a 13yr old was considered capable of consent.

She had her abortion in August at about 10 wks pregnant. The girl went on to finish high school and incredibly she married the guy! She had two children with him and eventually they divorced. She worked her way into a successful career and was able to support her children. There is way more to her story, but I know that none of what she accomplished would have happened if she had gone through with that first pregnancy.

The second girl was 16, neither she nor her boyfriend at the time were ready to have a child or even that serious in their relationship. She had her safe, legal abortion and finished school and married a different guy soon after she graduated. He is the love of her life, they are parents of one child and are still married.

Both of those cases were not rare, abortions were common even here in Utah and not controversial. The fact that the choice was there had a positive impact on these two young women's lives.

and for younger women underage, getting an abortion is usually out of the question.
So you end up with 13 year old children having babies (the daughter of one of my coworkers).
Half of the graduating class of high school seniors last year were parents.
      It's very sad.
