I used to work with an immigrant legal services NGO and we handled hundreds of VAWA cases.  In short, if you are an immigrant woman and your husband beats on you, VAWA lets you leave the relationship without facing deportation.  It is an essential law because, yes, it gives women options.  It makes sure they don't have to pay for their children's future by taking beatings.  In practice, this form of immigration relief is hardly ever abused; there is virtually no fraud in VAWA cases.  It even protects men - I know of a case in which a Pakistani taxi driver was viciously beaten by his wife (95% of the time its the other way around) and he was able to stay and get his kids educated because of VAWA.

I think the GOP objects in part because an undocumented woman who is subjected to horrible abuse can sometimes win the right to remain through a separate but related provision - a U visa for crime victims. The GOP would like to eliminate this, because their current position is to let immigrants suffer as much as possible so they will literally flee the United States.  The euphemism is "voluntary deportation".  I don't want to hear another peep about religious values and morality from this group of sociopaths.

Anyone who opposes VAWA or immigration relief for crime victims is simply beneath contempt.  Anyone who is so focused on sex that they would deny benefits to someone because of sexual orientation or gender identity is the real pervert.  It doesn't surprise me that the GOP is this way, but it does utterly infuriate me.
