it is almost impossible for businesses starting on a shoestring (which many newly unemployed and disillusioned job-seekers are trying to do) to hire even one employee.

I have a small business and before the recession hit I tried to add an employee. I was immediately bombarded with so many forms to fill out by all the various govt agencies - it seemed I was getting one a day by someone. And the bookkeeping required was horrendous, as was calculating payroll tax and all the other deductions.

And this was just for 1 part-time employee. I honestly would have to hire 1 full-time employee experienced in HR to keep up, and of course I didn't have that kind of income.

Starting small businesses and hiring help is basic to our economic well-being when jobs are scarce. If it was only do-able, streamlined, paperwork, forms, regulations, etc., all handled by some sort of umbrella company, and reasonably priced, I think small businesses could solve the unemployment problem quite easily.

I won't be holding my breath for that to happen, tho, and meanwhile I am stuck as a 1-person business.

In this day of high unemployment, many folks (me included), have started businesses. Its an uphill battle on so many levels, and big business- which runs the government, has gone out of its way to throw obstacles in our path. Insurance costs are just one of them. The self employment tax rate is pretty high, when you compare it to what a big corporation pays.

Perhaps micro businesses should get ourselves a lobby in DC to fight back. The potential here is enormous, when you consider the actual number we have in our ranks. By creating a micro business super-pac, we could buy massive TV ads extolling the virtues of starting a business (which would be as easy as selling apple pie) and to vote for our candidate.

There is no doubt that the deck is stacked against us, and the reason is pretty clear. What are we going to do about it?
