    and my wife amount to almost 50% of our adjusted gross income. That's way, way more than our tax burden. Our tax rate comes to about 21% and that is all either Social Security or KY state income tax. Our federal income tax zeros out. Paying no income tax makes us free loaders according to Republicans, even though what we paid in Social Security alone amounted to a higher rate than Mitt Romney paid.
       We continue to carry health insurance despite it leaving us less than nothing in discretionary income because having no insurance could cause us instant bankruptcy should we have a major health problem. We also think carrying insurance is part of being responsible citizens of our society.
        Insurance companies, however, have no concern for society. Our taxes are levied according to our ability to pay. Our insurance rates have no connection whatsoever with our ability to pay. If we can't pay we must do without health care or go bankrupt trying to pay for it.
