  •  That was the mantra of Herbert Hoover (8+ / 0-)

"Prosperity is just around the corner" and we know how that worked out.  At least HH feigned optimism.

"We have always known that heedless self-interest was bad morals, now we know that it is bad economics." Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Jan. 20, 1937

Hoover wasn't that bad--his predecessors destroyed the economy.  BTW, those predecessors are Ron Paul's beacons.

      Apres Bush, le deluge.

      •  Calvin Coolidge (4+ / 0-)

The worst, and one of the most stupid presidents of the 20th Century.  Although he suffered from severe depression after the death in the summer of 1924 of his 16 year old son, Cal Jr., who stubbed his toe while playing tennis on the White House tennis court and developed and infection an then gangrene and died a month later.

You look at both his post WWI relief efforts and his post-presidency efforts and he was a very compassionate man. His problem was that he believed the government shouldn't meddle in the economy and that only way to deal with a recession or depression was to do nothing and just wait it out. And that simply wasn't an option in the Great Depression.

      •  and Hoover II is in the White House now (0+ / 0-)

but try pointing that out to the partisans here.  Obviously Coolidge (Bush) was worse.  But there are politicians to Obama's left.  Greens.  Socialists.  Even a few Democrats.  You can vote for them.  It's even legal.

But you'd have to kick out the entire Democratic regime that's in there now.  I doubt most of you are ready to do that.

        So send in the drones.

A new year, a time for many changes. Some we will like, some we won't.

The financial elites have made certain that only a faithful servant will get the nomination of either major party, and the system is rigged to make sure third parties stay irrelevant.  That's why Obama acts like a moderate Republican, instead of an actual Democrat.  He knows we have no choice, except shooting ourselves in the foot.

Workers of the world, unite! You have nothing to lose but your shackles. It is by the picket line and direct action that true freedom will be won, not by electing people who promise to screw us less than the other guy.

        •  Everyone here is wrong except you, no doubt. (0+ / 0-)

"But there are politicians to Obama's left.  Greens.  Socialists.  Even a few Democrats."

Gee, really? I'm sure we didn't know that ... even though some of us are those folks.

"You can vote for them.  It's even legal."

We do ... when they are viable.

"But you'd have to kick out the entire Democratic regime that's in there now.  I doubt most of you are ready to do that."

I realize that it takes an IQ over 100 to realize this, but this sort of thing requires consensus across an entire population; when an individual votes on the ballot it is just a statistical datapoint, it isn't a regime-removal mechanism, although a lot of people with delusions of grandeur imagine that they have that sort of power. Thus, people need to make rational choices, such as between Obama and Romney.

Also, Obama is not Hoover II ... that's simply a lie.
