I've often dreamed of going back in time to see one of Abraham Lincolns addresses in person, but I suspect it would be a rude culture shock to do so.  The stench would be unbearable.  Not only the smell of raw sewage and rotting meat in any reasonably large town, but the people themselves.  This is a society where bathing a couple of times per year is the norm, and toilet paper was unheard of.  To our 21st century noses, the vague smell of shit would be everywhere.  No wonder it was in style to dress and speak so formally, it was all that separated us from animals.

become habituated and no longer notice offensive inputs.  That's why people who live downwind of paper mills will explain the odor of sulphur as "the smell of money" rather than admit they don't notice it anymore.

      Respecting a person's private space wouldn't hurt.

Perhaps our senses would become habituated, but it would not lessen the shock of 19th century filth.  It was the peak of human concentration prior to modern garbage and sewage disposal.

For the habituation it would take total immersion, though.  I worked for about 6 months in a lab with immigrants who had not adapted to our frequent bathing and use of deoderants.  It was fine in the winter, but I never got used to it in the summer, and respecting private space would only work if you defined "private space" as "whatever room one is in".  Funny thing is, it bothered me more that these guys didn't adapt to our social norms and treated women as inferiors.  Bad smells are unpleasant, but the crass sexism is what got to me.
