    Daughter of our next door neighbors tried to abort herself and died. Their only child.

    Five or 6 years younger, I had my own pregnancy scare  5 or 6 years later.

    I was seriously planning to joint the ranks of teen suicides because even though my parents were "liberal" according to the standards of the day, they had never wanted to talk about sex or birth control, I was ashamed and afraid to approach them, and my boyfriend wanted nothing to do with the situation. Only by great good luck it turned out to be a false alarm.

    It's incredible that in this day and age we apparently still have to defend birth control (along with public libraries and even public education -- what's next, a return to living in caves, chipping flint, and curing cuts by anointing the weapon responsible with bear grease?)
