  •  California High Speed Rail (9+ / 0-)

I'm tired of the media's inability to understand the budget totals for high speed rail.

Projects must be budgeted in year-of-construction dollars. The most recent plan stretched the construction timeline from an ambitious 10 years to a 'why bother' 30 years, with much of the most expensive construction back-loaded on the schedule. But that also means an average of 20 years' extra inflation costs included in the estimate.

The newest estimate also includes a 20% cushion for cost overruns that are not yet anticipated.

Those two accounting tricks account for 80% of the reported price tag - in real terms, the project budget hasn't increased much at all.

Budget the money to build it as fast as possible, and the price tag will drop nearly back to its election-day estimate.

Those who ignore the future are condemned to repeat it.

    •  High speed rail has the most value for freight. (2+ / 0-)

People will not move more than 500-700 miles before air kills you on time.

But for freight, high speed rail makes a lot of sense.  They really were interested in the Chicago - Denver or Chicago - St. Louis lines for agriculture  (moving grain...).
