    •  technically, IN is not open (0+ / 0-)

but practicaaly it is. We have a weird hybrid system where we don't register with a party affiliation, but we go on record for a party during the primary by the ballot we request. That info goes to the parties for GOTV during the general.

I personally talked to the SOS to clarify this in 2008 during the Operation Chaos  bruhaha. Precinct judges and inspectors can challenge partisan voters known to be crossing over.  Voters were challenged in 2008 and it got ugly.

Indiana also lost an opportunity to lose Rep Dan Burton in 2008 because moderate republicans crossed over in the primary to vote on the Dem ballot. Burton had a popular moderate challenger who would have won if not for the crossover votes.

Having lived through all that In 2008 I think Hilarity is a VERY bad idea.

I get the concept. Living in a red state I am often tempted to influence the Republican primaries by voting for the most moderate candidates. However,  when the crazies are involved it makes no sense to be tempting the fates by voting for them.

Focus instead on the down-ticket Dem primary races to show our progressive candidates the love.
