    that I honestly don't think that many of the progressive achievements of the past 100 years would be possible now. The labor movement? If that hadn't already happened, there's no way we'd get a 40 hour work week and unions. The suffragette movement would be called the suffranazi movement, and go nowhere. Forget civil rights and double-forget gay rights.

    I keep asking my father, who's in his 80s, how the hell we won those earlier battles in the first place.

    He keeps telling me that however crappy things are now, they were even crappier then. So I pass that on to you. I mean, I think there will always be men (and women, too--I bet Issa will win the women's vote in his district next time around) who want to control, discount, and terrorize women. But as bad as things are now, it's a lot better than 500 years ago. Or 100 years ago. Or 50 years ago.

    So no 'permanent' victory, but at least I hope we can look forward to an overwhelming one. Like on, say, interracial marriage.
