  •  Appreciate all your work in looking into the (6+ / 0-)

anonymous donor question. I agree Seid does look like a likely suspect  but a couple things puzzle me about it. When you look at the list of recipients of the Barbara and Barre Seid Foundation , there are a whole field of right wing organizations including as you mentioned, the Heartland Institute. So it's hard to explain why he would hide a part of his donations to them when he donates openly to many other orgs with similar agendas, and esp. when of the donations he does openly give to, Heartland is the largest. I know you also mentioned that but it doesn't make sense , to me anyway, to hide any of it when it's already public record that  his favorite is Heartland. But I'm not arguing that he isn't the guy we're all wondering about, he may well be , but as you said, no smoking gun yet. Thanks for all your research and the  links you provided.

    •  That's an important point, and while I can't say.. (6+ / 0-)

... that I'm entirely satisfied with my attempt at an explanation, I would note that this is the same pattern he followed with Shimer College (you'll see it further down that list), and also -- and I remain a bit puzzled by this -- with the Foundation for Jewish Camp(ing).  So it's odd, and I can't say I have a rock-solid explanation for it, but it is characteristic of his known behavior in other cases: smaller donations, usually for general operations, made openly through the Foundation; bigger donations, more specifically targeted, made anonymously through Donors Trust.

      •  That whole list is kind of strange, his choices (2+ / 0-)

are a weird mix of things, that don't seem like they would come out of the same bag. But then a weird mindset is kind of built into the far right anyway so no reason that should be surprising I guess. Just weird that he  would fly under the radar at times and in full view on others. I have to wonder what motivates him to hide the extra donations, and who is he hiding them from. Don't know why but that is making my antennae twitch But the more I think about it the more I think you've probably nailed it. But, either way, he's definitely one to be aware of. Thanks again for all your research, made some very interesting reading and gave me something to chew on for awhile.

      •  Perhaps need to hide the climate contributions (0+ / 0-)

more carefully since the anonymous donor, in this case, could be acting in coordination with large energy corporations for whom anonymity would be a demanded benefit.

With the US military now already adjusting future plans in response to expected global warming, things are moving quickly.

All those actively working to hide the facts of global climate change will in ten to fifteen years be seen as beyond criminal.

Wonder if the anonymous donor may be attempting to protect family members from that -- as if that were possible.

    •  It might simply be a matter of scale. (4+ / 0-)

For a similar example in your own life, no one might think it odd if you drop $5 in a Salvation Army bucket, but folks might start asking questions if you were giving them $20k a year.  Guilty conscience?  What's he hiding? etc.  Sounds like Mr Seid has an MO of trying to not have questions asked, so if he wants to spend inordinate amounts on a given thing, he might want to hide most of it, so that people don't wonder why he would be focusing on it so strongly, and maybe working to counter it.
