  •  Another good question (5+ / 0-)

"Can you oppose homeschooling and truly be progressive?"

Most progressives support a woman's right to choose.  We feel that the state should not be allowed to extend its monopoly on the legitimate use of violence all the way into women's wombs.  Making abortion illegal would allow the state to exercise violence against a woman in order to force her to bear a fetus to term.  Most progressives oppose this.

If you oppose a parent's right to choose to homeschool their children, then you are supporting the extension of the state's monopoly on violence into the home.  Making homeschooling illegal would allow the state to exercise violence against a family in order to force children to attend a school instead of learning at home.   Many progressives don't even seem to notice this.

People who oppose homeschooling might be preaching sound social values, but they aren’t practicing them. If progressives want to support the rights of children, we shouldn't contemplate the entry of state violence between children and their parents.  We shouldn't support forcing children to be confined in schools as if they were born prisoners. We ought to liberate our children, and then debate vociferously what they ought to be doing.

    •  I personally do not believe that the (0+ / 0-)

"at the point of a gun" hyperbole helps anyone's cause. It is not that we are ignorant of your claim.  We just do not believe that all actions of a government with which we disagree are either the moral equivalence of "violence" or real violence.
