in one diary and you've done an admirable job of it.

One observation:  While I generally agree that the South had superior military leadership--cf., e.g., McDowell, Pope and McClellan with Lee--overall casualty figures may not always reflect that superiority.  Southern forces in most of the major battles fought on the strategic defensive where attacking forces almost always suffer greater losses.  Cold Harbor is the bloodiest example of this.

Longstreet knew at Gettysburg that repeated charges at the dug-in Union lines would be a disaster and he counseled Lee to move around the Union left flank to position themselves between Gettysburg and Washington and fight on the strategic defensive.  Ignoring Longstreet's advice proved fatal for Lee and the Confederacy.

Thank you again for the diary.

However, Lee was under immense pressure from his government and the southern press to stay on the offensive. Many southern men felt it went against the nature of all southern men to take a defensive strategy. This even permeated down into the ranks of the Confederate soldier. Many historians say it was this nature which lost the Confederacy the war. Ironically enough, there are some who attribute that nature to the fact that they lived in a slave society and viewed defensive postures, subconsciously, as something slaves would do. And they could not have that.
