  •  I've thought a lot about this (5+ / 0-)

Same here.  Never liked country music for years, and the same could be said about rap/hip hop.

But I thought long and hard about it, and I came to the conclusion that it's a cultural thing.  I found myself writing that country music didn't "speak to me", and I also realized that rap and hip hop was much the same.  And that was a turning point for me.

I recognized that the music of no other nationality was in that same category - I embrace them all.  If, culturally, Peruvian flute music, African call-and-response, and Chinese high opera were all art forms I could fully appreciate, then I could develop the same appreciation for these American cultural forms as well.

There are certainly those who know much more about these niche genres than I, but what has changed is that I can now mine those forms for some of their inherent true gold - something I never did before.
