Christianists have been fulminating against the Enlightenment for many years now.  It turned the world "away from God" by advocating freedom of conscience and toleration. Obviously that's a bad thing to these folks.

I had a long argument with a cousin once about this.  He's a devout Southern Baptist.  He couldn't/wouldn't understand that it was Enlightenment principles, especially the move away from having an "official" State church, that allowed the Baptists and other denominations the freedom to develop in the 18th and early 19th centuries.

Naturally Santorum wouldn't like the Enlightenment because it weakened Catholicism.  But why anyone else would cheer him on is beyond belief.

Catholics would be the first to throw him under the bus if he gained power. No way would they tolerate taking orders from a pope. They have their own authoritarians to obey.

the Baptists were in jail in VA when that state adopted the Constitution.  They had to let them all out.  The bonehead should read up on the history of his own denomination at least.  And thank Jefferson for getting VA to adopt the thing.

somehow these extremists stopped short of deprecating all the Deists among the vaunted Founding Fathers--all of whom they've mistaken for prim pietistic church fiends (just as they mistake the Declaration of Independence and our Constitution as something like the Mayflower Compact)

Santorum isn't an alumnus of one of those pathetic little Christian degree mills, though he pretends to be as perfectly ignorant as those half-educated people. He's a disgrace to every school from which he earned a degree.
