  •  I can only read a map if I'm heading north, (5+ / 0-)

when I went to Florida from NY, I turned the map upside down; I can read upside down (teacher skill) but I can't reverse the rights and lefts.  I always plan some extra time to be lost and I avoid the city, no horizon, no sun, no way to know direction after the first few turns.

has a few set trunks, if I can keep in mind where those are, I'm never fully lost. They are my compass, both on bus routes and when I used to drive.  I know if I go north I'll eventually hit road X, and then I can find my way home from there. If I go East, I'll hit road Y, etc.

But mostly it's plan, plan, plan. Print out yahoo maps, make sure I mark landmarks and not just road names and directions (turn towards the McDonalds, not towards the 7-11). Like I said, I use "Dora the Explorer" directions often.

"Big tree, Pink house, Winn Dixie" to mark the turns in my head. Simple, basic, things that stick out. Of course, then someone paints their house and throws off my system LOL.
