  •  With empathy comes a desire to make things (5+ / 0-)

    better.
The pundit class is paid to give cover to those in a position to do something.

By dismissing those who suffer, the pundits make it okay to ignore them.

    •  meh. I see a whole lot of empathy and very little (0+ / 0-)

      progress on getting things "better".

We have to, at some point, take a cold hard look at where this country is going in the near and long-term future as far as jobs go.

We sit for decades and pine away at all the jobs lost overseas without making any changes in the way we plan for our future.  We send millions of kids to college every year for worthless degrees and fill them with expectations that simply filling a seat for four (or 5 or 6) years entitles them to a good paying job.  Guess what?  Those days are gone, likely forever.

We have given up all our manufacturing jobs without even a whimper.  Granted, laborious factory line jobs were going to go away anyway.  There are too many impoverished people around the world willing to do them much cheaper.

But did we even try to keep those jobs here by automating the manufacturing processes?  Did we ramp up computer controlled machining education by building new trade schools?  Did we build intermediate schools that were heavy on math and computers and machines as an alternative to college?

Did we recognize the coming shortage of machinists several years ago?  No.

No.  We did nothing.  And we are still doing nothing.  We are still stuck on "my kid is going to college, dammit.", even if there are no jobs.

Empathy is nice.. for about 2 seconds.  But it has got us nowhere in solving our problems.
