  •  I question how good our candidates were (5+ / 0-)

but you're right, Kline overperforms.  Still, that's 4 net points off of his total now, so it's definitely one to keep an eye on.

Ya, she was an epic fail of a candidate.  But even going back to 2002 Kline badly defeated Congressman Bill Luther 53-42%.  That 2002 race has been Kline's closest race since his return to Congress.

        First elected in 2002.

And DFLers have never put in the effort, which frankly is a big mistake.  He's as conservative as Bachmann is, which is way out of step with this district.

I personally think finding a candidate from the rural areas of the district should be attempted.  A Tim Walz type would be interesting, as the district does pick-up Wabasha county in the southeast.  Seems the opposite of where we should go, but I think being able to automatically rack-up margins in the counties south of Dakota county makes getting the rest out that easier.  One of the former legislators who represented Northfield in the state legislature, but were swept out in 2010, would be good candidates to recruit.  (Northfield is a major college town with one college that's considered a shoulda-been Ivy League, and another that's just an all-around good private school.  The city is in Rice county, and borders Dakota.)

For some reason I was thinking Kline beat Luther in 1998 but lost in 2000.  He actually lost to Luther in both 1998 and 2000 before beating him in 2002.

          •  The district was much different. (0+ / 0-)

It was basically Dakota/Washington/Anoka Counties. Anoka was much more blue then.

Here is a visual. Kline/Luther's district was 6.

Farm boy who hit the city to go to college, WI-03 (home, voting), WI-02 (college), -7.88, -4.26, One in ONE MILLION that recalled Scott Walker!!!!
