    around 200 people each year are shot and killed by police.
    I would have guessed a lot more, like 1000-2000.

    Do you have a link for this stat?  (Not questioning it, just want to use it for reference)

      I found several references to an FBI report for 2006 that said about 200 shot and killed, but haven't found the actually report yet. I also found this article that said 350 killed by police in a typical year but includes people killed in car accidents while being pursued by police. FBI.Gov has a lot of information on police shootings.

      I think the perception is that there are a lot of shootings is because they are always big news locally and quite often make national news.  Also most of the shootings are concentrated in a handful of large metropolitan areas so the story often gives the sense this happens a lot, because sadly it does happen a lot in that city.
