    Back in the misty past, women who had just had children were congratulated for being "delivered from" the pain and significant risk to their own lives that is childbearing and childbirth.

    The actual meaning of deliver may make more sense if you think of the "deliver us from evil" phrase.   Not to say that babies are evil, of course.  It's just that the actual production of another human being is extremely hard on the mother and comes with real and significant risk, both to herself, her unborn child, and any living children she already has to care for.
