    despicable as this whole situation was, girls were shipped off to gestate and labor in isolation and secrecy all the time. To my mind, the worst thing the priest did was dumping more guilt on that poor little girl (and you can bet there was already a ton of guilt eating her up [Catholic guilt does not require understanding or knowledge]) by telling her she was responsible for keeping her father from sinning and would have to carry the shame and secret for the rest of her life.  Shame and secrecy were pillars of the Church.  I truly believe to this day that if I had been raped, my mother would have preferred that I had been killed.  The shame would have been more than she could have endured.
