Don't forget to check out the Sci-Fi/Fantasy Index for previous entries in the series.

    I live for feedback.

... as painted by Frank Schoonover circa 1917:

      (Thanks to ERBzine)

Yeah, he got paranoid when he couldn't read John Carter's mind, after flashing on the mental key-combination, but somehow ignored the possibility of Carter picking up his homicidal remedy.

The whole Atmosphere Plant thing at the end is unresolvable -- I'm certain the Jeddaks of Mars hired a new security firm and told them "THINK up a better system!"

Burroughs also messed very little with telepathy after the first Barsoomian adventure.

Something that always struck me was that the guy at the Atmosphere Processor was wearing the same sort of diadem that was worn by the Holy Therns.

As we learn in the second book, a whole host of Red martians are in league with the Therns, sort of like the foot soldiers of the church as it were, and many of them had diadems that matched the whole nine ray structure worn by the wimpy White Martians.

Just a theory though. I really should re-read the books again.

... were a carry-over from Princess of Mars indeed.

The crisis of the Atmosphere Plant is still unresolvable, and would have been a major-league Big Deal that would have brought on intervention by the Holy Therns and the First Born -- except I don't think they existed in Burroughs' mind yet.

(However, I am unable to do a telepathic post-mortem to justify it!)

Just a leap of fate, thanx to ERBzine ...

Burroughs tended to forget about John Carter's telepathic abilities in Princess of Mars too, except when it was convenient.

There's definitely an untold story there somewhere about how the keeper of the atmosphere factory AND his back-up both happened to die at the same time.  (At least I presume the keeper died; the narrative only says that they lost contact with him).  Considering how the factory was sacrosanct, and how even feuding nations on Barsoom respected it, you'd think that actually murdering one of the factory's caretakers would be considered unthinkable.  (And the assistant's death wasn't accidental, he is decribed as having been assassinated).

Assuming the deaths of the two keepers are connected, the person responsible would have to be actively seeking to wipe out all life on the planet.  (Perhaps a rogue Thern with his own private atmosphere plant; or perhaps just a deranged madman).

In short, just the sort of villain we need someone like John Carter to thwart.  Too bad he's back on Earth.
