but the devils is totally in the details

For example, how big is your napkin?  do you use it several times before washing or do you discard it at the first hint of mucus? (which, btw, usually dries to be almost unnoticeable if you wait long enough . . .), do you wash it in hot or cold water? do you use environmentally friendly laundry detergent or not?

Similar considerations apply to disposable paper cups (compared to washing a real one) and even those disposable paper clothes from the 1960s that really were supposed to be ubiquitous (along with flying cars) by now.

    •  The impact of laundering napkins (3+ / 0-)

is probably very minor vs the impact of the usage stream of paper napkins. Just eliminating the chlorine bleaching of the wood pulp is a major plus, not to mention drying the wood pulp, shipping, packing in plastic, etcetera.

The disposable/reusable diaper comparison leans towards disposables due to the degree of cleaning required to make a poo soaked cloth all nice and sanitary again. For napkins and dishtowels, I would think the reusables would win out in most scenarios.

      •  actually, it depends... (0+ / 0-)

The studies and recommendations re disposable/reusable diapers is that in some areas, where water is scarce, it is probably more environmentally friendly to by disposable. In areas where water scarcity is not an issue, cloth is the better deal. At least that's the story years on back when I had to worry about such things.

But yeah, resuables definitely win out. I only buy new napkins every few years, and that's usually only b/c we're sick of looking at the old ones. And then I buy them on sale, big-time. Good for the environment, good for my wallet!
