  •  I've done a lot different jobs in my life so far (19+ / 0-)

and out of several different white collar office jobs, retail, janitorial, manual labor and serving in a restaurant, I'd say serving was the most stressful, with retail as a close second.

And for that stress, even with tips, it was right at the bottom in terms of what I earned, possibly tied with my first retail job.  It is pretty damn tough to make a decent living when you're getting $2 and change an hour and rely on tips to make up the difference.  Especially since I mostly had crappy shifts where things were slow as fuck for 6 of 8 hours and insanely, spirit-crushingly busy for 2.  It meant I didn't have the opportunity to make much for most of the shift, then had to attempt to wow tips out of stingy customers while serving 2 or 3 or 4 more tables than one could reasonably manage, running back and forth taking orders, making drinks/desserts, bringing out food, busing tables, bringing checks, etc.

Some days we'd be that busy just about all day, since they refused to hire enough staff for adequate coverage.  It would be great to walk home with the extra cash that night (completely, totally fucking exhausted I might add), but that never made up for all the shitty days.  So in the end, I probably made right around the normal federal minimum wage.  Maybe a little more, maybe a little less.

Oh, and you don't take it home with you?  Take home the fact that you never know how much money you will make next week with you and see if that doesn't stress you out when you have bills to fucking pay.

Your mileage may vary from place to place, but the basic experience is the same across the industry except for a tiny minority of outliers.

My point being: you don't know what they hell you're talking about.
