but some of the comments in the diary yesterday about forced fatherhood sounded chillingly to me like "if you do the crime do the time" - i.e., men should understand that every time they have sex they are undertaking potential parenthood whether they like it or not. This is exactly what the so-called pro-lifers tell women. What a way to look at creating a new life, as a punishment for having sex.

Every child deserves to be welcomed into the world by both parents. For me, no one male or female should ever be forced into parenthood, for the child's sake if no other reason. Pregnancy may not always be a choice, but carrying to term is a conscious decision.

That said, I've never understood the framing of this as an issue of people imposing their "personal morality" on others. What the hell is personal morality? We may have different ideas about what is and isn't moral, but no one thinks those ideas apply only to himself. Do we tell people they can steal or assault if they don't think it's wrong? I don't think so.

If a person thinks an embryo is a human being and that it's murder to abort it, then of course he is compelled to oppose abortion. I see it quite differently as a positive good made available by modern technology that helps us ensure that children have parents who want them and can take care of them. These are irreconcilable views as far as I can see, but it's perfectly appropriate for both of them to be fought for in the political arena.

We decided to move the center farther to the right by starting the whole debate from a far-right position to begin with. - Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay
