our government does spend enormous sums.

It is just that they do not spend these sums on things that benefit our people. Military spending higher than all other nations of the world combined allows other nations to spend more on  education, on social support, infrastructure, public services.

VAT tax that originates from higher income societies - higher minimum wages for example - and pays back all citizens, guaranteeing they will not fall below minimum standards of living is less regressive.   I do think there are some luxury taxes or very high income taxes in these countries as well, aren't there?

I don't think VAT is the one and only answer.

I said it provides very little. :)

I'm not exactly "pro-vat".  I think that in our country it would be a regressive system much more regressive.

I think, though, that in much of Europe it's a somewhat regressive element in a progressive system, and as such it's not really so horrible.

Additionally, the Scandinavian countries just don't have the Mega-Rich problems that the US or UK do.  Their 1%, unlike ours, still spends most of their money rather than speculating with it.
