James O'Keefe who feel that anything they do to entrap people is ok because it supports their cause?

Sorry, but this knife cuts both ways.  I am still of the old school that believes that ethics mean something.

Exposing a company that plans to subvert education to service business interests is far different than manufacturing "evidence" to destroy an organization that assists "brown people."

    •  C'mon (5+ / 0-)

he didn't entrap anyone, he acted like an investigative journalist. Where Gleick screwed up was not deciding ahead of time if he was an investigative journo or not. Then bailing after he committed.

      •  You may want to read AGU's response, DS (0+ / 0-)

They have an ethical problem with it....

        here

Gleick can make a decision to become an "investigative journalist".  But he should have declared his intent with AGU and NAS prior to doing so.

Can you say that Brietbart and O'Keefe are "not acting as investigative journalists"?

This line is becoming increasingly hazy and my students concern me.  They believe it is ok to hack a web site (like Anonymous) in the name of a "good" cause.

Perhaps it is time to have a Saturday discussion on scientific ethics versus investigative journalism.
