      I don't think this is true at all. He spent months trying to get a 2/3 majority in the leg to support taxes.

      fails to convince me.  I live here and I'm involved in progressive political discussions on these issues.  I disagree with Brown's choice here, but I don't think that it is evil.  This is a guy who has the consequences of Prop 13 -- without which he probably could have become President, by the way -- burned into his soul.  It makes him cautious about raising taxes -- as promised in his campaign against Whitman.  But it doesn't make him the enemy.  It means we have to show greater power, that's all.
