    but "down the hollow" suggests southeast?

    Peepers "looking through the glass" is a lovely description. Ice skimmed ponds happen here maybe once a year.

    Have you seen red shoulder kids in the past?  

    I came for the politics and stayed for the science.

      60 miles west of St. Louis Mo. I too love my father in law's description of looking through glass. He was a true old timer and he was very much in tune with the natural world. Spent many hours talking with him on his front porch. I miss  that. I've never saw any red shoulder babies but I have watched two separate nests of red tails go from eggs to fledglings in my life. The first one was many years ago as a kid and the second was a few years ago. That nest was in a large sycamore that hung right out over the river and I floated under it many times over that summer.
