  •  Vatican quit the book & movie & other bans? (5+ / 0-)

When I was young Catholic kids were not allowed to view stuff on the no no list.  They were not allowed to go to any religious service except Catholic.

IIRC -- television in peoples homes blew a hole in their ability to keep children safe from contrasting views.  So they quit the blacklist and started getting cosy with interfaith meetings with clergy whom they could influence to push their pet dogmas.

I've had plenty of good outcomes working together for social justice in interfaith groups of lay people who agree to disagree on dogma  --- just recuse self from the projects that offend your faith's dogma.   ie Free clinic handed out condoms -- so no Catholics.  The Presbyterian lady found out that the Jewish lady she liked working projects with, did not join Church Women United also -- because she doesn't pray in Jesus's name or attend "church."
The Catholic woman of the year told her priest they should stop praying for "conversion of the Jews" because Jews are doing just fine.   We all attended one church's production of "Jesus Christ Superstar".    An one Episcopalian church held a Passover Seder for congregants - so they'd know what the "Last Supper" was.

None of us "lost our faith" because we educated ourselves about other faiths.    But we did get some prison reform, even tho Chain Gang Charlie Crist was against losing the ball and chain on crews doing roadside work in hot humid Florida.

Most folks I've known who quit their faith --- was over stupid dunning to pay up on their tithe pledge.

But, I'm 70  So what do I know?

I think their plan to annoint Marco Rubio in Tampa
as a veep pick for Santorum or Willard ---  since he grew up Mormon, changed to Catholic, and attends tea party fundamental Protestant churches too----- is brilliant pandering.  He's the perfect multiple choice religious fanatic.

Kids grow up and make their own choices.  Once they learn you lied about Santa ---- you are toast on forcing them to accept your word as truth.  Rick seems not to have read the memo.
