...even when they're 100% in the right, that may give them pause.  He may justifiably feel his career is in jeopardy, or he may simply be one of those folks who don't publicly stand up well to pressure.  Human failings, and something to work on perhaps.

It's difficult to stand up to those more powerful than you.  I've done it a few times, on a MUCH smaller scale than this, and it can make your life pretty rough for a while.  Gleick is going up against billionaires and their bought-and-paid-for politicians and corporate shills.  Gotta be hard.

Science is hell bent on consensus. Dr. Michael Crichton said “Let’s be clear: The work of science has nothing to do with consensus... which is the business of politics. Science, on the contrary, requires only one investigator who happens to be right,”

Maybe he had no idea how much support he could get from the grass roots.

I tend to think he travels in the elite circles of the nonprofit world, where "decorum" is important and doing anything to seriously rock the boat is "unthinkable."

OK, so now he's made his choice, whether he knows it or not: to abandon ship on the elites and "beautiful people" and to hop on the freighter with the grungy grassroots.

Someone needs to let him know in no uncertain terms, that we will have his back but he has to stand up and ROAR.

"Minus two votes for the Democrat" equals "plus one vote for the Republican." Arithmetic doesn't care about your feelings.
