    The pathway of gasification, followed by Fisher-Tripsch catalysis, originally developed for coal (in the 40s I think?), will also work for biomass.
    Yup, the Nazis were doing this in World War II to produce gasoline because their access to oil was severely restricted.

    At the time, not a great process, but it did get them some horrendously expensive gasoline.
