    Livingstone county (Ann Arbor/Howell), Ingham county (East Lansing), St Clair (north side Detroit) and Lapeer are part of a court district that includes the northern lower peninsula and the whole UP, Jackson and Washtenaw are attached to Grand Rapids and the west of the state, but Calhoun county (west of Jackson) is connected to Wayne County (Detroit).

    It certainly looks like a gerrymander. I assume they elect judges in MI? Note that Flint (Genessee County) is connected to Oakland and Macomb counties (two of Detroit's 'white flight' counties - one working class, archetypical 'Reagan Democrats', the other wealthy, Rmoney country). Without looking at any numbers, I'd guess that the court map was drawn to elect one Dem and 3 Repubs.
