Bob Altemeyer's research into authoritarian followers and their unscrupulous leaders, is summarized in his excellent book, The Authoritarians.  You can download his whole book at this page.  I downloaded it a couple of weeks ago and I couldn't stop reading it.  Altemeyer credits John Dean for publicizing his research.  The way that Altemeyer describes the leaders of authoritarians is that they are high on the scale of social dominance but not necessarily on the scale of beliefs that promote authoritarianism, e.g., fundamentalist Christian belief and a belief in a patriarchal family structure.  Those who are high on social dominance as Altemeyer are sociopathic in their behavior.  This explains Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and a whole bunch of other conservative 'publicans and how they captured the right wing authoritarian crowd.  This research out of Berkeley is a strong parallel to Altemeyer's work.

All the way to the end, where there are experiments done by combining different groups together. In fact, I thought the experiments were the most interesting part, but you need to read the rest of it to understand what they are doing.

The experiments explain a lot of what we see in the world.
