Everyone has problems.  But compassion arises from experience; people who don't have compassion (if they're not mentally ill) typically haven't experienced hardship.  However, people do exist who are naturally compassionate; I'm just saying that it's more difficult to be compassionate if you don't share the hardships of your fellows.

immediately i begin to think of the compassion of bobby kennedy who had inborn compassion that surpassed any of his brothers, imo.  or even an actress of the caliber of meryl streep who had a pretty average middle class upbringing with no real attendant hardships and yet can plumb these amazing depths of feeling, both on and off screen.

i see the world so differently from many people.  i think people who are compassionless - mitt, for example - are absolutely born that way. absolutely. and they can even be born in the middle of a compassionate family. mitts father george was a far better human being than his son for instance. (and vice-versa: compassionate people can be born into compassionless families)  and there is no way for that to change.  no amount or type of experience will change or evolve them.  i put ronald reagan in this category.

i think it is very very easy for these people to rise to the 'top'.  because there is simply no heart there, and therefore no subjective experience of reality and never will be because there is no receptive center, no heart, for that experience.  so they can just cruise through unimpeded by any considerations.

you might be with me thus far, or at least be willing to entertain the notions i'm expressing, but here's the corker: at the basis of these empty beings there is at, their core, pure hatred.  and i don't think people really allow themselves the shock of how true this really is.  allow themselves to assimilate it at a level that runs deeper than just the mental, the intellectual level.  don't allow themselves to feel in their hearts what these people really are.
