since my generation was considered to be a cash cow for the producers of that show.

i was 17 when the beatles first album hit the u.s. shores - when they hit the ed sullivan show.

when the monkees were then "selected" to "perform" as a group for a television series, most of my classmates were appalled!  it was a move that marginalized the music of the beatles and the "revolution" that followed.

when "eleanor rigby" was released, you could feel the cogs of the wheels jam and shift and change the direction of my generation.

"a day in the life" and so many other songs coming out of our time (all the way through "imagine") shifted our awareness of those around us and our place within the bigger social context.

the monkees, otoh, were there to sell commercials, make money, seduce the younger set into buying their "products", including music that originally they didn't even perform (instrumentally).

i will give credit to the three actors who became the singers of the group - they eventually pushed for the right to play their own instruments and actually could sing, no matter what the origin of the group.
