From what I can find on him it sounds like he's actually pro-choice, or at the very least pro-choice in some cases.  It's a big shift from Ben Nelson who is rabidly anti-choice.  Those views may not have effected Kerrey so much back in the 80's-early 90's but it would seem that would hurt him winning Nebraska these days.

    •  He's pretty socially liberal... (3+ / 0-)

in general.  He was one of only 16 senators to vote against DOMA, for example.

He'll be fine on social issues.  He'll be terrible on economic issues though - he's a "very serious person" on those - free trade and deregulation all the way.

      •  Free trade all the way isn't accurate (3+ / 0-)

He tried to restrict Canadian wheat shipments that put Washington and Nebraska wheat growers at a disadvantage (McCook Daily Gazette August 1994) and he voted to impose sanctions on Japan if they refused to open their markets to US car parts.

His votes to normalize relations with China and authorize fast track have to be balanced against those actions he took to support US growers, workers and manufacturers.

Back in the 90's when free trade agreements first really accelerated there was a lot of support from both the right and left.  In my younger years (18-23'ish) in college I thought they were a good idea.  Wasn't until the early-mid 00's that I realized what a scam for the 1% they actually were, as did many on the left.

Kerrey was down the line pro-choice.  And voted against DOMa. And voted against the flag burning amendment.

Makes for a good GOP line of attack actually.
