among his handlers when this kind of stuff happens?

I have visions of them hearing the latest gaffe, and thinking "omg. wtf! Again? I GAVE him that position paper."

Then there's a pause for some head-banging -- somewhere there's a wall or a desk -- and possibly a table, a credenza and a potted palm -- with  many forehead dents.

Then a couple of eyerolls pass between (among) those in the know. And a scramble to figure out how to address the issue.

Then the designated sucker has the fun of talking to Romney.

"So, governor, I think we have to gain some clarity on your position on [gaffe 10,972]. As you know, the issues are [X, Y, Z] and based on your input of last week, we need to be especially strong on [X]. So maybe we can say [some dumbshit thing or other]?"

"Sure," says the governor. "You're right. Let's go get ahead of this thing."

Sucker thinks "we're already so far behind the eightball I can barely see it."

    Sucker says "Absolutely governor."

    Lather. Rinse. Repeat.
