  •  I agree that motivations are what will be judged. (0+ / 0-)

Many believers do good things, expecting a "payday" in heaven. And they will be surprised when it is dismissed. I was flipping their statement. I hope for noone to be lost and have to endure eternal misery. But my understanding of Christian teachings requires acceptance of Jesus' sacrifice on the cross to gain eternal life in heaven. The athiest on judgement day will have the same standing as a criminal before a judge saying "I don't believe in you! You can't send me to jail" But I respect that others believe differently and don't intend to try to push mine on them.

...over the idea of people "endur[ing] eternal misery".  Why would anyone want to go to Heaven to be with a being who subjects people to "eternal misery."  One cannot be both compassionate and threaten people with torture.  If God exists and Hell is real, then God is sadistic and evil.

I'm sorry if my first comment set the wrong tone to represent me. That " first impressions" thing seems to have bit me. I understand and appreciate your view. From my understanding, and I am faliable, the premise is that "they did it to themselves". If they deny His existence then they have rejected Him, and want no part of what He has created. What you percieive as a threat is meant as a warning. At least that's how I understant it.

more like a condemnation.  I've had enough people in my life telling me that I was going to Hell.  Not only did it make me believe in Hell, and believe that I belonged in Hell, I even started to think about how to kill myself so that I could get to Hell quicker.  Thankfully, I was able to realize that the concept of Hell and a compassionate God are totally antithetical before I could kill myself.  Demands that people believe under threat of torture is abusive and psychologically damaging.

Even as a Christian I had an aquaintance who was "on fire for the Lord" witnessing to me about tithing with a condemnation tone. I dread to think how many people he has pushed away with his approach. And noone should have EVER made you feel like you belonged in Hell. I am glad that you didn't kill yourself, that would have been a tragic loss.
