  •  I'm with you on this. I cringed at some of the (0+ / 0-)

epithets hurled at Hillary Clinton during the primaries. I was supporting Obama, but when I criticized people here for sexist remarks about Hillary and pointed out that we were lucky to have 2 great candidates, I was accused of being a concern troll.
I also try to tone down people who say ugly things and use offensive language and sometimes I get support for doing that. I particularly object to sexist language and to names for our opponents that end with "tards." (having had a son who would be called a "retard" by some people, I always feel sick when I see that). Denise Oliver Velez has also criticized the use of that suffix.
I really wish that we could show a better approach to politics and debate than the right wing. For the most part, I think liberals/progressives are more circumspect. But there are those "on our side" who glory in the use of the most offensive ugliest language and I don't feel they are very good emissaries for what we are advocating.
I was particularly proud of the students at U.C. Davis for their remarkably effective silent protest of the Chancellor and the recent similarly wonderful protest by women outside the state capitol in Virginia. Not all protests should be silent, of course, but these had a real Ghandi-like feel to them.
