watch what they wish for.  All things being equal, of course Pres. Obama could destroy Icky Ricky (I picked that name up at TPM today).

But what happens if there's a calamity like the Iranians hitting Tel Aviv with a conventional missile?  And the Israelis attack Iran's nuclear facilities?  And oil goes over $200 a barrel, as someone suggested today on Alex Witt's show?  And gas goes over $6 per gallon?  That's not impossible, even though for now it's still improbable.

And then the collective limbic system of the U.S. electorate kicks in and you have Pres. Santorum?

If a scenario like this happens and Mitt Romney is the Republican candidate he is far less likely to engender panic and Pres. Obama would still have a shot at winning.

And, if the worst happens, don't you think life with a Pres. Romney would be a tiny degree more bearable than with Pres. Santorum?

    •  If gas goes over $6 per gallon (0+ / 0-)

people will bellyache at first but it will soon become the new normal. $2.75 sounded like murder right after Katrina. Now it sounds cheap.

(Actually, if oil goes over $200 a barrel I get a chance to dump that goddamn Canadian Oil Sands stock that's pulling down my IRA.)

      •  No, it will come out of everything else (0+ / 0-)

because incomes are not going up. It will come out of 'luxuries' then it will come out of necessities. It will make a difference,

        •  If the price rise is fueled by speculation (0+ / 0-)

it will not stay at that high level. The biggest hit will be people who use home heating oil. Most people can drive less, but few can stand huddling together in a 45 degree home.

But how the Republicans think they will blame Obama for it--I don't think the people will buy it. Especially if Obama asks Congress for heating oil assistant and the pissant Republicans do their "No! No! No!" response.

    •  Santorum would cause riots and widespread (0+ / 0-)

protests.  Romney just might be able to pull off boiling us frogs with his whackery.
