  •  Troops don't vote. They follow orders. (19+ / 0-)

They don't vote for particular content to be included on AFR, program schedulers do. They might look for particular interest among the men and women they serve, but ultimately the programming choices must be approved by those higher in the chain of command.

Ultimately, that stops with the Secretary of Defense, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, and the President.

All it would take is for one of them to say something like, "It simply is not appropriate and matter of grave disrespect for our fighting men and women to listen to a talk-show commentator repeatedly slander a young woman who had done nothing more than give requested testimony to Congress. These men and women have families -- mothers, sisters, and daughters. To allow Mr. Limbaugh's program to continue on AFR would give the impression his behavior and language when referring to this young woman, Sandra Fluke, was in some way acceptable and just 'entertainment.' It is not. What it is, is unacceptable. And this sort of thing has no business being served up as Armed Forces approved entertainment."

I went to the AFR website and noticed that they do also have Ed Schultz, Sean Hannity, Mike Huckabee, and Alan Colmes.

Probably the fairest way to handle it would be to develop a policy of "no partisan shows" and just pull all of them from the lineup.  That might be easier to defend in the court of public opinion.

is not depriving the troops of conservative opinions

it is not his political opinions that are a problem

it is his ongoing racism, sexism, homophobia and fomenting of hatret

This is the way to handle it.  This is not a freedom of speech issue.  This is a sexual harassment and hostile work environment issue.  Having sat through the DoD civilian version of the sexual harassment training last month, I can attest that the Army is very serious about this.  Even trying to call it humor is not acceptable.

I wonder if we are looking at the right outlet.  Armed Forces Radio and Television Service is at the following link: AFRTS Home Page.  They are also known as the Armed Forces Network (AFN).  They are located at Fort Meade.

There is another unrelated site that calls itself the Armed Forces Radio Network.  They are located in an office building in San Diego.

Only AFRTS is associated with DoD, as it is an osd.mil website.
