  •  High gas prices are good. Higher would be better. (2+ / 0-)

I know high gas prices are very bad for many people, so that's not good.

But if we cannot have a carbon tax putting money in the public treasury and driving gas prices higher, then unbridled speculation seems to be the only thing doing it. It's a terribly bad way to go about it, but the high prices are beneficial in the big view.

Why? Because high gas prices seem to be the one essential factor in motivating (or enabling) Americans to make more efficient vehicles, buy them, or develop electric and other alternative vehicles, alternative fuel sources, high speed rail, etc.

If gas were a buck a gallon would there be any action toward developing transportation alternatives at all? Not a chance. Price is the motivator. Wisdom is in short supply but greed seems to be taking up the slack. Whodathunkit?

We need that transportation shift to help delay/minimize climate change. Climate change will devastate budgets as much as anything, to put it mildly.
