    Prices rise because demand is rising and supply is flat. More people want to use oil-based fuels and products than every before. It is difficult to continually increase supply.

    From that can grow various schemes of players like the Kochs. Also that basic condition makes is so that any disruption (like Iran sanctions) has an inordinate influence on price.

    But the basic deal is rising demand and tight supply.
